What counts as a small event?

A first birthday with family, a Mangni at home, a dholki the week before a wedding, a milad, a graduation dinner or an anniversary. These events usually have somewhere between a few dozen and a hundred or so guests, and the hosts often handle much of it themselves. That flexibility is the advantage, but it also means more small decisions land on you.

Where should we hold it?

At home or on the rooftop. The most personal option and often the cheapest. You will need seating, lighting, power backup and possibly a tent or shamiana. Check that neighbours will not be bothered by parking or music, and keep a fallback indoors if the weather turns.

A restaurant's private room. Food, seating and cleaning are handled. Good for adult birthdays and dinners, but less flexible on decor and timing.

A small hall, marquee section or farmhouse. Useful above roughly fifty guests or for children's parties with activities. Browse venues in Lahore and filter by your area, such as Gulberg or Model Town.

How much food do we need?

For small events, a caterer with a short menu usually beats ordering from several restaurants. Ask for a per-head quote with a set number of dishes, and tell them the age mix: children eat less, and a family with many elders may want softer food and less spice.

Popular choices for small family events include BBQ, karahi, biryani, a pasta or Chinese dish for children, and a dessert table. A live chai counter works well for winter evenings. Our caterer questions apply here too, scaled down.

Simple decor that looks good

Small events do not need a stage. A backdrop for photos, a decorated cake or dessert table, fairy lights and a few balloon or flower clusters go a long way. For a Mangni or dholki, a small floral swing or low seating with cushions sets the tone. A decor and tent service can handle a home setup in a few hours, including the shamiana and lights.

For children's birthdays, ask about themes, a balloon arch and props. Keep candles and sparklers away from fabric, and agree who clears up at the end.

Do we need a photographer?

For a Mangni, a first birthday or a milestone anniversary, many families think it is worth booking a photographer for an hour or two. Ask for a short package with a fixed number of edited photos and a clear delivery date. Browse photographers for portfolios that include small, indoor events, which need different skills to big hall weddings.

Children's parties: keeping it safe and simple

If many of the guests are children, plan the event around them. Keep it to two or three hours, start in the late afternoon rather than at night, and serve food earlier than you would for adults. A short activity, such as a magician, a puppet show, face painting or a few games run by one adult, keeps them busy better than a long list of things to do.

Check the space for hazards: rooftop edges, open stairs, loose wires from lights and the generator, and hot food counters within reach. Ask the decorator to tape down cables and keep the balloon arch away from walkways. Have one adult watching the gate if the venue opens onto a road.

A short checklist

  • Three to four weeks out: fix the date, guest count and place. Book the caterer and venue if needed.
  • Two weeks out: book decor, photography and any entertainment. Send invites.
  • One week out: confirm numbers with the caterer, order the cake, plan seating and power backup.
  • The day before: confirm arrival times with each vendor and set out a space for gifts.
  • On the day: give one person the job of handling vendors so the hosts can enjoy it.

You can post a request for each service on Bandobast and pick Birthday or another event type. Vendors send offers within 24 hours. For an Aqiqa, see our Aqiqa planning guide.

Common questions

How far ahead should I plan a birthday party in Lahore?

Two to four weeks is usually enough for a small event. Book earlier if you want a specific venue on a weekend in peak season.

Is it cheaper to host at home?

Often, but add up tent, seating, lighting, power backup and cleaning before deciding. A restaurant private room can work out similar for small adult events.

Do caterers take small orders?

Many do, especially for family events. Ask for a per-head quote with a set menu and check any minimum guest count.

Can Bandobast help with small events?

Yes. You can post requests for catering, venues, decor, photography or makeup for birthdays, Mangnis and other family events.

What decor does a small event need?

A photo backdrop, a dessert or cake table, lighting and a few flower or balloon clusters cover most small events.
